About Us

In the Beginning....

Approaching retirement after successful careers in education and insurance and having vacationed or called Bar Harbor our summer home for over 27 years, we opened Udder Heaven Ice Cream Retreat in 2008. We began by offering premium ice cream from a well respected distributor fully intending  to make our own. Our home made production in "Heaven" commenced in 2012. 

Our Ice Cream

We have gradually expanded our creations to over 65 flavors of super premium ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet, sorbet, Italian ice, soft serve and non dairy desserts. We are always exploring and experimenting with something new.


Our dairy mix ingredients contain no growth hormones and are sourced locally from cows raised on Maine farms. Our base mix is processed in Maine using short shelf-life pasteurization methods that require all our high-quality ingredients to be used fresh.  



More Than Just Our Ice Cream

 

  • Being in Maine, of course we have our own whoopie pies
  • Our ice cream pies make for a great after dinner dessert
  • We offer blueberry pies either whole or by the slice
  • Our cookies and brownies are created right here in "Heaven"

Always Learning

We continually look for opportunities to improve our skills and our products. Our chief ice cream maker has completed industry recognized programs conducted at Cornell University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Wisconsin, University of Florida, Ice Cream University (Yes, there is such a place!) and Pre-Gel (Gelato) of America. 


Each winter we try to attend a formal industry or educational conference. At the very least  we stay informed of industry advancements and product trends. 


We are a longstanding member of NAICA - The North American Ice Cream Association 


With a constant eye on food safety, in addition to regular shop training, several of our staff are ServSafe Manager certified. 

Health and Safety Precautions

Cleanliness is a fundamental and vital responsibility. So in addition to compliance with CDC and Maine Health recommendations in the age of COVID-19, we take many steps to protect our customers and our staff. 

  • Checklists help maintain regular cleaning routines
  • Our staff is equipped with hats, hairnets and gloves
  • Specific allergen protocols and procedures are followed both in preparing and presenting our products
